The Song On The Wind

Once there was a vast kingdom filled with people, so many people, people of all kinds and of all walks of life. Around this kingdom was a massive wall that rose high into the air. No man or woman could climb it and it had no gates on any of its sides. This kingdom was ruled by a tyrant king who made slaves of all the subjects of that land.

There was a girl who lived in a tall house close to the high wall of that kingdom. And each morning she would climb to the roof of her house and look up at the high wall and then out over the kingdom. The city was always quiet that time of morning and she would listen. All she would hear was the sound of the air passing over the wall above her. She would sit and listen to it and wonder where it had come from and where it was going. And she would think about how free that wind was to be able to go wherever it pleased anytime it pleased.

Then one day everything changed. The girl rose in the morning and climbed to the roof. She sat and listen but instantly she heard something different in the wind. A song! There was a song being sung somewhere over the wall and it was being carried by the wind! She couldn’t make out the words of the song but the tune was vibrant and merry… almost free! She stood and listened closer but soon the song faded away.

She wondered about the song all through her day and what hope it had brought her.

The next morning she rushed to the roof and listened and there was the song again! This time she could hear it louder somehow even though it seemed to be the same volume as before.

She hurried downstairs and got her parents and sisters and brothers and rushed them up to the roof and they all heard it too! A song! Carried by the wind! Then it faded away.

Morning after morning, more and more people of that kingdom listened and heard that song carried on the wind. It gave them hope and filled them all with wonder at what might be beyond that high wall.

And one day they did all make it over the wall.
