Part 38: The First Incredible Adventures Of The Girl With No Shoes
Chapter 5: The Announcement
Time passed quickly for Anne’s family as they settled into their life in the outskirts of the new town. The winter turned to spring and with it came new joys and discoveries.
One evening Anne’s mother had an announcement to give to her small family. Lovie called the family together in their small living room after they had all eaten dinner and she had cleaned up the dishes.
“What is it dear?” Richard asked his wife as he sat in his oversized reclining chair in the corner of the room. Lovie brought him a cup of tea. “Thank you dear,” he said, taking the hot mug from her hands.
“Oh yes! Mother, tell us what exciting news you have!” Anne begged as she took her seat on the couch next to her mother.
Lovie just smiled and sat down with Jubilee in her lap. She looked down into Jubilee’s eyes and brushed her face lovingly with her hand. Jubilee had grown quickly over the past months and was now almost a year old. She was soon fast asleep on her mother’s lap. Lovie looked up to her eagerly waiting family and announced, “I am going to have another child.”
Richard and Anne gave a shout of excitement, then Richard asked, “Are you sure dear?”
Lovie nodded and replied, “Oh yes, all the signs are there.” She put a hand on her belly. “I think I’d like to have a boy this time,” she added with a small laugh.
Anne cheered and danced around the living room unable to contain her excitement. “Oh mother, I’m so happy!” she said over and over again. “I hope you have a boy too. How wonderful it would be to have a little brother to play with.”
“Calm yourself dear,” Lovie said, then added, “You’ll wake up Jubilee.”
Anne laughed at that and replied, “Oh mother, you know nothing wakes her up.”
Richard was lost in thought over the news. Lovie asked him, “Dear, what are you thinking of so quietly?”
He smiled warmly to her and replied, “Oh, I was just imagining all the things I would do with a son. I would teach him all the things my father taught me.” Lovie smiled back at him as he went on and on about this and that. Then he said, “Oh course if it is a girl I will love her just the same if not more.” He laughed as he caught Anne up off the floor as she walked by him. She giggled and laughed as her father tossed about him like a doll. She loved it when he swooped her up. Lovie laughed to herself watching her husband and daughter play.
Anne was overjoyed at the thought of the new brother or sister that would be joining their simple life soon.
Spring slowly turned into summer… and with summer came warmth and sunshine. Lovie’s belly grew and grew. Anne helped her mother more and more around the house and learned to do new things both in the kitchen and about the house. With a new brother or sister on the way Anne knew her mother would need all the help she could get. There was a tangible excitement about the house.
Richard spent time adding a new room to the house to be a nursery for the new baby. He had some friends from town as well as a few clients from the bank come over and help him put the great wooden beams in place for the room. Anne watched all this construction work with wide eyed wonder. She loved to watch each board being placed and then hammered full of the hundreds of nails. Soon the room had taken shape and then the walls were placed.
“Oh papa, the room doesn’t really match the rest of the house.” Anne said to her father one day as they stood outside looking at the progress he had made.
Her father laughed a hearty laugh and replied, “No, I guess it doesn’t, does it? I don’t think the new baby will notice though.” He tousled her hair with his hand and leaned down to kiss the top of her head.
Anne thought for a moment then asked, “Papa, do you think it really will be a boy?”
Richard knelt next to his daughter and took her little hands in his. He smiled and replied, “We won’t know till he or she is born. Whichever he or she is, we will love him or her just the same.” Anne knew he was right.
Just then Richard pointed off to the edge of the clearing near the wall of trees. Anne turned to see what he pointed to and saw a mother deer step into the clearing followed by a tiny baby deer. “Shhhh…” Richard whispered. Anne kept quiet and watched.
The mother deer cautiously stepped further into the clearing then began to munch on the grass nearby. The baby threw caution to the wind and began to dance and buck around her mother.
“They play like we do,” Anne whispered to her father. “Yeah, they do, don’t they?” Richard replied, then added, “Come now, let’s go wash up for dinner young lady.” He lifted her up off the ground and threw her over his shoulder. The deer and its baby startled and disappeared into the trees in a flash.
