Chapter 1: The Flames
I have this longing in my soul to be with and among people, but God has called me away to be alone with Him. Tears flow from my eyes as I write this so deep is my loneliness. But God asked me to give Him my loneliness as an offering. And so, I want to obey and turn to Him and enter what I know to be the flames of His presence.
Why flames? Why fire? … Because His presence is the fire that purifies and consumes. It changes one thing into another. What was there before isn’t there anymore, but it is refined and becomes something purer. I am terrified of the flames and the fire that surrounds Him. I have seen them, and I have felt them, and the pain is so intense that I fear them. No, they do not burn the flesh of my natural body, but they burn the flesh of my inward heart. To stand before the Lord of Glory in the Holy place of the Secret Place… is to be burned in the place of my own deep seated will.
I must surrender all to Him, every single part of me. I must die to what others think and to what others want and to what others believe. I must fully embrace what God is speaking to me. I must have faith that it is His voice that is calling, and I must rise, act, to obey that voice.
Don’t you see? He is calling and I must answer. This morning I was supposed to go to house church with my friends here at the Farm, but God has said no. This breaks my heart and challenges everything in me. I long to laugh and talk and share life with others. And God knows this… He mentioned it yesterday to me as I walked with Him. He asked me to give this to Him as well. Don’t you see? Fire and flames.
But I want to know Him. I want to know Jesus and I want to know the cross. I want to obey no matter the personal price I must pay.
God told me once that “the produce of solitude feeds the entire world.” And that holds such deep, spiritual truth that I cannot fully grasp its meaning. I have words, words He has given me and words that I can offer to the world. God is calling me come and meet with Him and so I must go. Everything in my flesh, my selfish self, wants nothing to do with this journey, because it knows it must die in that journey. But my spirit knows and drives me forward, because it knows that through this journey I will behold and lay hold of the One my heart loves.
What happens when we count the cost, and that cost is the death of ourselves? Not my will but yours be done are easy words to say aloud but to walk them out is much harder. In fact, without God’s help it would be impossible.
This morning He asked me to write this book that you are reading now as I am in this season of Solitude.
This book will be what I can offer you in the way of words from my time alone with Him. This will be the bread that comes from His mouth, and I find it funny even as I write this that God is speaking through me. I know what that feels like… His Spirit hovers over and moves through the words. And though they are weak and broken He puts His power behind them. Not in time no, but in eternity. Outside of what is weak and outside of what is broken and outside of what is known. This is one of the greatest mysteries in all of creation, how God works through man.
So let’s enter the flames and see what God will say…

It’s all about the Fear Of The Lord. And it comes by the Spirit of the Fear Of The Lord. It is an awesome power of God that flows through all things. He is. And because He is we are. And those made by Him should tremble at the thought of being at the mercy of the One who created them. Fear God… the scriptures say… and so we must with all our hearts fear the Living One… for our very life comes from Him and yes, every single breathe is by His will alone. Do we see it yet? Can we see it? Can you feel it around you even now as you sit and read this? His fire of flames that surrounds all those of whom He loves so deeply, that unquenchable fire that is His love.
You will know the Fear Of The Lord because it does two things when it falls on you: first it consumes completely all of you and shows you how desperate your need for Him truly is, and second it shows you just who you really are before Him. It is the Holy Spirit and the essence of Light. Described throughout the Word as the Angel Of The Lord… take off your shoes for the ground you stand on is Holy Ground. Woe is me for I am a man of unclean lips among a people of unclean lips!

Holy, Holy, Holy! My heart cries out! Holy! Holy! Holy! Are you Lord God almighty! Do you hear the cry? Do you see it? The holiness of God! All the heavens and the earth declaring the holiness of God.
We need a return to holiness. First in our own hearts and then outwardly in our family and churches. We need a return to purity and a return to elevating God to His rightful place as Lord of our lives. We need to walk away from and forsake the polluted religion that permeates our modern cultures.
We need to Return To God.
