Part 38: The First Incredible Adventures Of The Girl With No Shoes
Chapter 8: The Wide Lands
Anne walked across the grassy fields of the wide-open lands of this new world, this eternal world. She took it all in: the smell of the wildflowers, the birds flying overhead in lazy circles, and the fish jumping out of the water of the wide blue river. Everything seemed perfect here.
Anne wondered how darkness had found its way into such a beautiful place. She was so lost in thought and in the sights and sounds of that place that she didn’t notice time going by, of course, in this place time had no meaning.
“Hello there!” Anne heard a deep man’s voice yell to her from far up one of the hills off to her right.
Anne looked up and saw a man walking down the hill toward her. To her he was very handsome. His eyes were dark green, and his short hair was a deep auburn color. He wore a simple long-sleeved shirt with black pants. He had a bag thrown over one of his shoulders and on this leather bag was the symbol of a trumpet woven in gold thread.
“Hello there.” Anne replied. She continued walking forward, not sure how she should react to this stranger’s sudden appearance. After all, He was only the third person she had met in this strange eternal land.
“I am Tuck.” The man said as he began to walk alongside her. “The queen sent me to help you along your journey.”
Anne gave Tuck a sideways glance asking, “Oh, the queen? Which queen?”
Tuck let out a laugh and replied, “The queen that pulled you from the pond not too long ago. Have you forgotten her already?”
“I have not. I just don’t know anyone here yet.” Anne said.
Tuck smiled and sped up to put himself in Anne’s path and lifted a hand to get her to stop walking. “Hold up for a moment please,” Tuck said. “Let’s start this out right shall we?”
Tuck held out his hand to her and said, “My name is Tuck En. Nice to meet you, Anne Of The Light.”
Anne smiled back at him. She took his hand, shook it, and replied, “Nice to meet you, Tuck.” She figured she might as well be friendly to him as she would probably need all the friends she could make in this place if she was to do what she had been brought here to do. “Are you the friend the queen said I would meet along the way?” Anne asked as they began to walk again.
“I am that friend,” Tuck replied. “The queen told me she was going to call you today into our world and that you were going to help the seven realms push back the darkness that has encroached into our lands.”
“The darkness,” Anne whispered and then asked, “How do I ‘push back this darkness’?”
“Well, in our world everything is threes and sevens you’ll find.” Tuck began to explain.
Anne cut in, “Like the seven realms?”
Tuck laughed, “Yes, yes, like the seven realms. Now let me explain it all as best I can and then you can ask me whatever questions you have.” Anne nodded as Tuck continued, “You see in each of the seven realms there are three pillars of light. Each of these pillars of light are guarded by seven great warriors. These pillars of light hold each of the seven realms within the kingdom of the light. They push back the darkness that is outside of our world, which is always trying to find a way in. You are going to have to discover how the darkness found a way into our world and figure out how to push it back out.”
Anne interrupted, “And how am I supposed to do that? I only just arrived here. What makes me so special? Why can’t any of you do this?”
Tuck smiled and replied, “You are a child of the light. We don’t know why it has to be you; we only know that it must be a child of light. You were the child of light chosen for this. That is all we know. The queen knew that she had to call you out of the pond and into our world when she first saw the darkness enter our world.”
The two of them walked in silence for a bit. Anne wondered what a child of light was. She wondered why she was chosen; I mean certainly there are other children of light out there besides her. Anne asked, “Aren’t there other children of light out there that could have been chosen?”
Tuck laughed and replied, “Oh yes, there are many children of light in your world but only a few are called and only a few of those who are called are chosen. The Light chooses who is called and the Light chooses who comes.”
Anne asked, “What is the ‘Light’?”
“The Light is not a ‘what’ but is a ‘who’. The Light is the first and the Light is the last. The Light is the one who created all the worlds of all the worlds that are. The Light created your world, and the Light created our world.” Tuck explained in hushed reverence.
Anne thought for a moment then asked, “Why am I called Anne Of The Light?”
Tuck smiled and said, “Because you were born into the Light. The Light called to you, and you answered that call.”
“I don’t remember being called nor answering any calling.” Anne replied. “I remember meeting the Light in my dream. He said that I belong to Him, that I am His. All He said was that I was about to embark on an adventure.”
Tuck glanced at her to see if she was joking or serious and when he saw she was serious he said, “That’s a personal thing that happens between you and the Light. You alone know those things. All I can tell you is that here you are known as a child of the Light. The Light chose you and sent you here to do what you have been called to do. Others have come before you and there will be others called after you. I know that every child of the Light that is sent here has a purpose to fulfill.”
The two continued walking across the wide-open grassy fields toward the narrow valley ahead. Anne noticed that the light was not fading from the sky, so she figured that there was no night here in this world nor did she feel tired at all here despite having been walking for a while now. She felt alive and full of endless strength, as if she could run and run and never get tired. Anne was glad to have a companion to travel this journey with, even if he was a stranger to her. If the king and queen had sent him then he must be trustworthy.
Soon they found themselves standing at the very edge of the wide lands of grass. They both stared up at the towering cliffs of rock and the narrow passageway between them. The walls of rock were covered in ivy and grass patches here and there. Anne could see the darkness of the clouds that lie beyond the narrow valley.
“Is there no other way to get to where we are going?” Anne asked.
“No, this is the only way. We must go through the narrow valley and come out on the other side.” Tuck replied. “Don’t worry, the Light is with us, and He will make sure we reach our destination.” Anne took a deep breath and then took a step saying, “Well, let’s go then.” And the two of them walked up to and entered into the narrow valley leaving the wide-open grass fields behind.
