Chapter 5: Learning To Walk Upside-down

Once there was a boy who lived in a town at the edge of the world. Everyone who lived in this town knew that they were not far from where the world ended and so they stayed clear of the edge of the world.

One day the boy decided that he wanted to see the edge of the world for himself. He wanted to know why everyone was so afraid of the edge and why they kept back from it always. So, he set out in the morning and walked all day to where the edge of the world sat. When he came closer and closer to it, he felt strange. He felt drawn to the edge like it was calling him to come closer.

And closer he came to it. One step at a time he walked closer and closer to the edge. He knew he should turn back, and he knew he should run away but he couldn’t. He had to see what it was… he had to see the edge. And so, on he walked. He could now hear a song coming from the edge. This song sang and sang. It called him to come. He felt himself swaying to its melody.

Suddenly he was standing right on the edge looking out over the vase nothing of the beyond the world. He began to lean forward more and more. The song sang on calling him fall. It sang for him to let go. It sang for him to come and fall. And so, he did. He fell over the edge.

But as he fell, he fell around the edge and found himself standing upside-down at the bottom of the world. All before him was the underside of the world and it was beautiful. It was perfect really. All the trees and grass he saw were green. Nothing was dead or dying. Now what was he to do?

The song called again for him to come and so, step-by-step, the boy learned to walk upside-down, and he began to explore the underside of the world. And he was never seen again on the above.
