The Man In The Doorway

Once there was a large city, so larger in fact that it filled the whole, wide world. The population of this city was uncountable. One day in this city was as if thousands had passed and as a thousand passed one a single day passed. This city had rulers and it had judges and it had governments and it had people, yes, people just like you and people just like me.

One day the sky of this large city was overshadowed and covered in a type of darkness that grew as the days passed. The people of this city ran this way and they ran that way trying to understand this shadow of the sky above. But no one could discover its meaning, but surely they all, yes, all the people of the city knew the end was near.

There was a man somewhere in that large city that was going to his daily work when he passed by a large door he had not seen before. It was a plain door, large and square, made from wood. And this door was open and beyond the door was only smoke, or a cloud, or something that kept anyone looking in from seeing what was beyond it.

And the man saw standing in the doorway a man who was dressed as plain as he way. The man approached the man in the doorway and ask, “Who are you? And where does this doorway lead?”

The man in the doorway replied with a smile, “I am truth and this is the doorway to safety. If you pass by me and enter this doorway you will find safety from the darkness.”

The man of the city looked round and round past the man in the doorway trying to see what was beyond but he could not. He then asked the man in the doorway, “But I cannot see in and beyond, or where this doorway leads. Surely this isn’t the only doorway to safety. Surely there are in fact others around this large city by which one might find safety from the darkness.”

The man in the doorway smiled again and said, “I am the only way to life. There is not another doorway or another by which you must pass to find safety from the darkness.”

The man of the large city considered it and then said, “I believe you. Let me enter so I can be saved.”

And the man in the doorway allowed the man to pass through.

Now it happened that as the man from the city passed through the doorway he returned back into the city just where he had been standing before only this time he was facing the opposite direction. He looked over at the man in the doorway and asked, “Why am I still here?”

And the man in the doorway said, “You’ve been marked now. You will be safe from the darkness. Go into the large city and tell others about me and this doorway. Spread the news about the only way to safety from the darkness.”

And so the man from the large city that had been marked by the doorway of safety from the darkness went into every part of the city and told others of the man in the doorway.”
