Part 62: The Sin Of Survival
Chapter 10: Repenting Survival And The Self-Sins
To repent from a sin means to make a U-turn and go in the other direction. Survival and the self-sins that follow after it must be repented of in this life. We must know with all that we are that God alone is the source of everything. We must remain dependent on Him each day. We must walk in the power of the Holy Spirit and in the ability of the Spirit to live a holy life.
Perhaps for this we need to repent for each of the self-sins and get a good picture of what that looks like for us to understand it:
Self-Righteousness:
- “God, I repent of the sin of self-righteousness. Forgive me for thinking that I could ever do anything to save myself. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
- “God, I thank you that Jesus is my righteousness and my holiness. I thank you that any good in me is because you dwell in my heart and have made me a new creation in Jesus Christ. Let me not think more highly than I ought, but to focus on you. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
Self-sufficiency:
- “God, please forgive me of the sin of self-sufficiency, of relying on my own strength to accomplish things in life. Forgive me and wash me in the blood of Jesus Christ. Thank you for being my source. No one and nothing can provide what you do, Lord. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
- “God, let me find my sufficiency in you. Let me know that everything I need comes from You and in for You. Let me be generous with what You’ve given me because I know that with you there is no lack. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
Self-pity:
- “God, please forgive me for dwelling on my perceived misfortunes and viewing myself as the victim, rather than seeking Your grace and strength in every situation and circumstance. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.”
- “God, allow me to be filled to overflowing with an understanding that I am NOT a victim, but I am Your child. Help me understand that You are will me always. Allow me to have a heart of forgiveness towards others and You have forgiven me and continue to forgive me. In Jesus name I pray, Amen!”
Self-reliance:
- “God, forgive me of my self-reliance. Forgive me for trusting in my own abilities and resources rather than seeking Your guidance and provision. In Jesus Name I ask and pray, Amen!”
- “God, fill me to overflowing with confidence in You. Allow me the strength to seek Your guidance in all things. Teach me to trust in You to provide all that I need for life and godliness in this world. In Jesus Name, Amen!”
Self-love:
- “God, forgive me for my excessive focus on myself and my needs, so often to the detriment of others. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen!”
- “God, please teach me to love others and put their needs before my own. Give me that joy that comes from living as a servant of all, as Jesus did. Teach my heart to be content on what you’ve given me and let me always be generous to share what I have with those who do not have. In Jesus Name, Amen!”
Self-promotion:
- “God, forgive me for seeking attention and validation through my own efforts rather that relying on Your glory. In Jesus Name, Amen!”
- “God, allow me to seek Your approval in all things. Allow my heart to be satisfied with knowing that I am about my Father’s business, and it is from You alone I’ll receive my reward. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
Self-deception:
- “God, forgive me for failing to recognize my own failings, flaws, and shortcomings, leading me to a false sense of security. In Jesus Name, Amen!”
- “God, let me always find my security in You as you lead me down the paths of my sanctification to become more and more like Jesus. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.”
There are many more self-sins, and this is just a starting point on the journey of learning to walk in God’s ways and to see the world as God sees it.
